“If your dance floor feels dead, maybe you’re playing the wrong music”

Madonna has seemingly responded to Charli XCX‘s “dancefloor is dead” comments.

Charli’s recent single ‘Rock Music’ has gone viral for its bold declaration: “I think the dancefloor is dead, so now we’re making rock music”.

The ‘Brat’ singer also previewed the lyric in an interview with British Vogue, where she elaborated: “It’s fun to flip the form. We know there’s gonna be people who are bothered by it, but that’s fine”.

Now, Madonna has seemingly responded to Charli XCX’s comments on social media. The pop legend is currently gearing up to release the long-anticipated sequel to 2005’s ’Confessions On A Dance Floor’ with ‘Confessions II’.

On an Instragram post, Madonna captioned a series of photos: “If your Dance floor feels dead / Maybe you’re playing the wrong music”.

Charli XCX is currently preparing to release her second single ‘SS26’ later today (May 21).

She has responded to reactions to her pivot to “rock music”, calling the consensus “really interesting”.

“My friends and I have been discussing how, in ways, it reminds us of the initial discourse around pc music, how the label was deemed as almost critiquing or looking down on pop music or something,” she said, adding that she also felt a similar way when she dropped her third EP, ‘Vroom Vroom’, in 2016.

“It’s all kind of fascinating. I love talking about music and art with my friends, so I’m happy people are throwing out thoughts,” she continued. “I’m not gonna explain where I was coming from with ‘Rock Music’, but all I know is that things can be funny, earnest, sincere, and joyful all at the same time and that’s what I feel about a lot of the things I make.

“Anyways, just was thinking about things and thought I’d put them on the internet, will probably regret it,” she concluded.

Meanwhile, Madonna’s new album is set to drop on July 3. She has reunited with the producer of the original album, Stuart Price, whom she already revealed she had been working with back in December 2024.

“When Stuart Price and I first started working on this record, this was our manifesto: We must dance, celebrate, and pray with our bodies,” Madonna explained. “These are things that we’ve been doing for thousands of years — they really are spiritual practices. After all, the dance floor is a ritualistic space. It’s a place where you connect —with your wounds, with your fragility.”

“To rave is an art. It’s about pushing your limits and connecting to a community of like-minded people,” she added. “Sound, light, and vibration reshape our perceptions, pulling us into a trance-like state. The repetition of the bass, we don’t just hear it but we feel it. Altering our consciousness and dissolving ego and time.”

‘Confessions II’ will be Madonna’s first record since her 14th album ‘Madame X’, which arrived in 2019.

So far, she has released the singles ‘I Feel So Free‘, and her Sabrina Carpenter collaboration ‘Bring Your Love‘. Madonna had previously appeared with the ‘Espresso’ singer during her Coachella headline set.

Elsewhere, Kylie Minogue has responded to rumours of a Madonna collaboration on ‘Confessions II’.
