“I want to love and be loved, but I also want to be free. The tension between those two things has been the central question of my life”

Julia Jacklin has announced her fourth studio album, ‘The Gem’ – listen to new single ‘Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon)’ below.

The Australian singer-songwriter will release the 10-track record on September 25 via 4AD (pre-order/pre-save here). It comes after Jacklin recently signed to the British independent label, and follows her 2022 LP ‘Pre Pleasure’.

‘Get Away From Me…’ is a breezy, lighthearted love song, in which the musician anticipates the potential for loss that romance can bring. “There’s no need to be sure/ That this feeling will stay/ I’m just trying to ready myself/ For what’s coming my way,” she sings.

Jacklin later adds: “There’s no need to be sure/ That love is coming my way/ I’m just trying to ready myself/ To get through the day.”

“I want to love and be loved, but I also want to be free. The tension between those two things has been the central question of my life,” said Jacklin of the theme that underpins ‘The Gem’.

The forthcoming record also features songs such as ‘Brand New’, ‘If I Had The Hand Of God’, ‘Angel Vision’, ‘You Turned On The Tap’ and ‘I Wish’ (featuring The Maes).

Jacklin co-produced the album alongside Robert Muinos, who also mixed and engineered the collection. ‘The Gem’ was recorded at Rat Shack in Melbourne, Australia, between December 2024 and December 2025.

‘The Gem’ is named after a small bar on a backstreet in Collingwood. She enlisted friends Jacob Diamond (guitar), Mimi Gilbert (bass) and Jess Elwood (drums) to play on the album. The musicians recorded in a converted hotel room upstairs at the pub.

Jacklin recalled the year-long creation of the LP, a vast difference to recording her previous projects in just two weeks: “‘The Gem’ felt like a metaphor for the whole process, because a lot of it did feel like digging.

“I felt like I was doing it almost in the dark, just trusting I was going to find something.”

The tracklist for Julia Jacklin’s ‘The Gem’ is:

1. ‘Brand New’
2. ‘God Sometimes’
3. ‘If I Had The Hand Of God’
4. ‘The Hardest Thing’
5. ‘Angel Vision’
6. ‘Real Life’
7. ‘Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon)’
8. ‘You Turned On The Tap’
9. ‘Walk On Me’
10. ‘I Wish (feat. The Maes)’

Jacklin has announced some in-store record shop performances in the UK and Ireland, too. These will take place at Dublin’s Spindizzy (June 28), Brighton’s Resident (29), London’s Rough Trade East (30), Liverpool’s Jacaranda (July 2) and Rough Trade Nottingham (3). Visit the retailers’ websites for further information.

A huge UK and European headline tour is set to follow in early 2027, after a run of North American shows this November. Find any remaining tickets here.
