Sam Fender and Olivia Dean’s “Rein Me In” (Polydor) becomes the longest-running #1 single by a British act in U.K. chart history, while Madonna breaks a record on today’s albums tally.
In achieving a 16-week, nonconsecutive run at the summit of the Official Singles Chart, “Rein Me In” breaks a 32-year-long mark previously held by Wet Wet Wet’s “Love Is All Around” (Dry Records).
Discussing the remarkable trajectory of the track, which was released over a year ago, Polydor Label Group President Ben Mortimer said, “From the beginning, we knew that ‘Rein Me In’ had a rare quality, so it was important to give it the space and support needed to grow. Watching it build has been incredibly rewarding—that kind of sustained success doesn’t happen by accident; it takes brilliant artists and a dedicated team.”
“Rein Me In” now draws level with Canadian Bryan Adams’ 1991 chart behemoth, “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” (UMG), which holds the record with 16 consecutive weeks at #1.
In order to claim the longest-running Official #1 single of all time, Fender and Dean need to beat American Frankie Laine, who spent 18 weeks at #1 in 1953 with “I Believe” (Columbia).
On today’s Official Albums tally, Madonna is the first American woman to earn #1 albums over five decades as CONFESSIONS II (Warner Records) earns her a 13th U.K. chart-topper.
Rising star SIENNA SPIRO’s Visitor (Capitol/Method) is the biggest British debut album of the year so far, landing at #2. Three tracks from the set are in today’s Official Singles Top 40: “Material Lover” holds steady at #15, “Die on This Hill” rises 67 places to #19 and “Great Expectation” enters at #32.
