Game of Thrones fans had a rough time forgetting and forgiving the original show’s finale, but the franchise keeps thriving. Warner Bros. has now officially confirmed a movie is on the way.
After the original eight-season series, the franchise expanded with two more spinoff prequels: House of the Dragon, which is set to return for Season 3, and A Knight of Seven Kingdoms, currently filming Season 2. That isn’t all, because there are more stories to tell in Westeros. At the CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Warner Bros. confirmed the reports that a Game of Thrones movie is in the works, and unveiled the title: Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest.
What to Expect From Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest?
This isn’t the first time the film has been brought up, but it is the confirmation fans waited for. The first-ever film in the franchise will be part of Warner Bros.’ slate for “2027 and beyond.” Aside from the title, Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest also enlisted House of Cards showrunner and Andor writer Beau Willimon as the writer.
The upcoming entry is expected to follow the original conqueror Aegon I Targaryen, and whose story is chronicled in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a book detailing hundreds of years of Targaryen ruling, and the same source material for House of the Dragon.
Aegon I was the first to unite the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros under one ruler, and forged the Iron Throne from the melted weapons of his enemies. So far, there is no official casting for the upcoming movie.
Initially, Aegon’s Conquest story was confirmed as a spinoff series in April 2023. Mattson Tomlin was attached to the project at one point, but Warner Bros. changed the adaptation entirely and confirmed it as a film.
