Chappell Roan responds to criticism of NSFW Grammys “awesome and weird” red carpet outfit

Chappell Roan has responded to those who have criticised the NSFW red carpet outfit she wore to the Grammys this weekend.

The 68th edition of the annual awards ceremony took place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday (February 1), and Roan was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Solo Performance for her hit single ‘The Subway’.

While showing up to the event, however, she quickly got people talking for her unusual dress – which was a sheer, maroon gown with a hood, and when unfurled, revealed a dress of the same colour, which was held up by a pair of nipple rings.

Unsurprisingly, the look drew mixed opinions from viewers at home, with some seeming baffled at why she chose the look, and some praising her for thinking outside the box and going for something eye-catching and original.

“What is up with that dress she is wearing,” one wrote on X/Twitter, while someone else agreed, “She looks so uncomfortable, who thinks this stuff up”.

Others, on the other hand, were more positive about the look. “Chappell serving body-ody-ody while the haters clutch pearls. Icon behaviour unlocked,” one user shared, and someone else chimed in “Fashion is art, art is fashion. I don’t know if it’s purposeful, but the style resembles Hellenistic and Classical Greek sculpture. I appreciate the beauty of it.”

Now, Roan has responded to the dress going viral and the outrage of some people about it, and said that she was surprised that it was such a talking point.

“Giggling because I don’t even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit,” she wrote in a caption, sharing a series of photos from the night “The look’s actually so awesome and weird. I recommend just exercising your free will; it’s really fun and silly.”

Roan was named as the winner of Best New Artist at last year’s ceremony, and took to the stage again this time around to present that same award to this year’s winner in that category, Olivia Dean.

While she was up for two awards on the night, she lost out on the Record Of The Year trophy to Kendrick Lamar and SZA for ‘Luther’, and was beat to the post for Best Pop Solo Performance by Lola Young with ‘Messy’.

It was rapper Kendrick Lamar who was the biggest winner on the night, and others taking home major awards at the 2026 edition included Bad Bunny for Album of the Year and Billie Eilish for Song Of The Year.

The latter two both called out ICE while accepting the awards, and Olivia Dean seemed to make a jab at US President Donald Trump when winning Best New Artist.

Performances at the ceremony came from Sabrina Carpenter who went for an airline theme, Lady Gaga who joined forces with Andrew Watt and Josh Freese, and Justin Bieber, who got fans talking after performing in just his boxer shorts.

Others taking to the stage included Tyler, The Creator, Spiritbox, KATSEYE, ROSÉ and Bruno Mars, and tributes from Lauryn Hill, Slash, Post Malone and more.
