The legendary music festival Ozzfest is preparing for a return after several years away from the live music scene. The revival is being led by Sharon Osbourne, who originally created the festival alongside her husband, rock icon Ozzy Osbourne.

For many rock fans, the name Ozzfest carries a lot of history. During its peak years, the festival became one of the biggest touring events in heavy music. It brought together some of the most important bands in metal while also giving rising artists a platform in front of massive audiences.

Now, nearly three decades after it first began, plans are underway to bring the festival back.

The Story Behind Ozzfest

Ozzfest first started in 1996. The idea reportedly came after Ozzy Osbourne was rejected from the lineup of the popular alternative music festival Lollapalooza. Rather than accept the decision, Sharon Osbourne chose to create a brand-new festival focused on rock and metal.

What started as a two-day event quickly turned into something much bigger. The festival soon became a touring show across the United States, featuring dozens of bands performing throughout the summer.

From the beginning, Ozzy Osbourne himself was at the center of the event. His band Black Sabbath often headlined the shows, drawing huge crowds and giving the festival a strong identity in the metal world.

A Festival That Helped Shape Modern Metal

Over the years, Ozzfest became known for its impressive lineups. Many of the biggest rock and metal bands of the late 1990s and early 2000s appeared on its stages.

Groups like Slipknot, System of a Down, Disturbed, Rob Zombie, and Marilyn Manson all performed at different points during the festival’s history.

Beyond the major names, the event was also known for introducing audiences to newer acts. The second stage often featured up-and-coming artists who were still building their careers. Several bands that later became global stars first gained attention through their Ozzfest performances.

Because of that mix of established legends and new talent, the festival played a role in shaping the sound and direction of modern metal.

Ozzfest Becomes One of the Biggest Touring Festivals

During the early 2000s, Ozzfest reached its peak popularity. The festival toured multiple cities every summer and regularly attracted tens of thousands of fans. Many shows featured two main stages with music running throughout the day.

At the time, it was considered one of the most important events in the heavy music calendar. Fans traveled long distances to attend, and bands viewed a spot on the lineup as a major opportunity.

The festival also expanded beyond the United States, hosting special editions in countries like the United Kingdom and Japan. By then, Ozzfest had grown into an international brand connected closely with Ozzy Osbourne’s legacy in rock music.

Why the Festival Eventually Slowed Down

Despite its popularity, the festival became less frequent during the 2010s. Changes in the touring industry, rising production costs, and Ozzy Osbourne’s health challenges all played a role.

Instead of the large annual tours that once defined the festival, there were occasional special events, including the collaboration Ozzfest Meets Knotfest, which brought together the Ozzfest brand and the festival created by the band Slipknot.

Eventually, the festival disappeared from the touring calendar altogether.

For many years, fans wondered whether it would ever return.

Plans for the Festival’s Return

That question now appears to have an answer. According to reports, the festival is being prepared for a comeback beginning in 2027, with early discussions pointing to shows in Birmingham, the hometown of Ozzy Osbourne.

Birmingham holds special meaning in the history of heavy metal. It is widely considered the birthplace of the genre, largely because of the influence of Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne’s early career.

Launching the revived Ozzfest there would connect the festival directly with its roots.

Organizers are also exploring the possibility of expanding the event again if the first shows are successful. That could eventually mean additional concerts in other countries.

Keeping the Festival’s Spirit Alive

One of the defining elements of Ozzfest was its commitment to showcasing both legendary artists and new talent. Sharon Osbourne has reportedly indicated that the same approach will continue when the festival returns.

The idea is to keep the spirit of the original festival alive while introducing younger rock fans to new bands.

That formula helped make Ozzfest special in the first place.

A Moment That Means a Lot to Rock Fans

For many fans who grew up during the peak years of Ozzfest, the festival was more than just a concert. It was an experience that brought together thousands of people who shared a love for heavy music.

Entire generations discovered their favorite bands at Ozzfest shows. Long summer days filled with loud guitars, packed crowds, and unforgettable performances became part of rock culture.

The possibility of seeing the festival return again has already sparked excitement across the rock community.

After years away, Ozzfest may once again take its place among the biggest events in heavy music. If the comeback goes as planned, a new generation of fans could soon experience the festival that helped define modern metal.
